License agreement

SHEAFPRESS END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT

Version 1.0. Effective on the date you install or use Sheafpress.

1. THE SOFTWARE
"Sheafpress" means the Sheafpress desktop application and its documentation. "We" means [YOUR LEGAL ENTITY NAME]. "You" means the person or company that installs or uses Sheafpress.

2. LICENSE
Subject to this agreement, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Sheafpress on computers that you own or control, for your own writing and publishing work. A paid license key is a one-time purchase for the major version you bought (for example, 1.x) and includes all updates to that major version.

3. FREE TRIAL
Sheafpress can be used for 14 days after first launch without a license. The trial is limited to one per person and computer. During the trial you can export DOCX manuscripts and ACX scripts; EPUB, print and proof PDF, tracked-changes DOCX and cover files require a license key, as do all of those exports after the trial. You can always open, edit and save your own project files, and export your story bible, without a license. To enforce the one-trial limit, Sheafpress records when the trial began on your computer and, while unlicensed, sends a one-way hashed device identifier to our server (see the Privacy Policy). You may not circumvent the trial limits.

4. YOUR WORK BELONGS TO YOU
You keep all rights to everything you write, import, edit and export with Sheafpress. We do not claim any rights to your content, and we do not receive it. Sheafpress stores your work on your computer.

5. OPTIONAL AI FEATURES
AI features are off until you add your own API key for a provider you choose (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint). When you click an AI button, the text needed for that action is sent directly from your computer to that provider using your key, under your agreement with the provider. Review the provider's terms and privacy policy. AI output can be wrong; check it before relying on it.

6. RESTRICTIONS
You may not copy, share or resell your license key; remove or bypass the license check; reverse engineer Sheafpress except where the law allows it despite this restriction; or rent, lease or sublicense Sheafpress.

7. THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE
Sheafpress includes open-source components listed in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md, each under its own license.

8. BACKUPS
Software and computers fail. You are responsible for keeping backups of your work. Use File > Save project to keep copies of your books in a location of your choice.

9. NO WARRANTY
SHEAFPRESS IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT EXPORTED FILES WILL BE ACCEPTED BY ANY RETAILER OR PRINTER; ALWAYS PREVIEW AND PROOF YOUR FILES.

10. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST DATA OR PROFITS. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR SHEAFPRESS.

11. REFUNDS
If Sheafpress does not work for you, contact support@sheafpress.com within 30 days of purchase for a refund.

12. TERMINATION
This agreement ends automatically if you breach it. On termination you must stop using Sheafpress and delete your copies. Your own files remain yours.

13. GENERAL
This agreement is governed by the laws of [YOUR JURISDICTION]. If a part of it is unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. This is the entire agreement about Sheafpress.
